Is Transportation an Essential Service?

March 20, 2020

IAM received this communication from Southwest Port Services:

Transportation is considered an essential service in California and is not subject to the State of California shelter in place rules.  All ports are open and operating normally.  We are in the process of implementing work at home for our employees that do not have to be on site.

This is a very dynamic situation and is subject to change at any time.  As we saw yesterday in Houston, one sick person can shut down an entire terminal.  The same thing could happen in California but it’s unlikely to cause an interruption in service beyond a single shift.  Most dock workers are not in close contact with each other in the performance of their job.

It appears that most local movers are also open for business.  At this time we are calling each consignee to verify that they are working prior to dispatch.
